Its been some time since I’ve posted to this site. I’ve been somewhat consumed for these past week or so. Having a daytime job that demands nothing less than your full commitment to complete numerous tasks and adhere fully to project timelines can really suck the life out of you! Especially when it renders you unable to have any spare time to spend on things you are passionate about, like updating your blog.

Fortunately, quiet a number of those tasks I worked on are things I can really relate to passionately. When I say passionately, it simply means that I really like the work that I had to do, and it didn’t feel as though I was actually working. This is always true when the work allows me (whether forcefully or voluntarely) to try out some really useful web development tools or platforms which I didn’t have the time, courage or simply the excuse to try them out before. For those of of you who can’t seem to get enough of new Facebook Apps, here’s a good one for you. Although, you have to actually be a person who blogs, to use it. Blog It is a Facebook application created by Six Apart (the people behind Movable Type), which allows Facebook users to compose ‘quick’ blog posts and broadcast it to any of the 10 external blog platforms and posting services currently supported, all this from within Facebook itself. Pizza.com Domain Name Sold For $2.6M

According to a news report from BBC, Chris Clark, a 43 year old American has sold the domain name Pizza.com for a price tag of 2.6 million dollars.

Windows Vista Goes Pink in Japan

How do you market a product in Japan? Well, apparently Microsoft found the answer to that question. They have released Windows Vista Home Premium in pink packaging, exclusively for the Japanese market. The package includes a 1 year subscription of Windows Live OneCare and a copy of Vista tips and tricks book bundled inside. Story via istartedsomething.com.

Let’s face it, nobody really likes widgets. More so, one that has a name that is supposedly derived from a corny play on the sound a frog makes, and the word ’scribe’. While I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of frogs, I will also have to admit that we don’t actually have to like widgets, in order for them to become useful. People put widgets on their blog or site for the primary reason of the functionality and benefits it bring to the blog or site. Everything else comes second.

Wubi: Install Ubuntu on Windows Like Any Other Application

Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) is due to be released in April 2008. It is already out now as a BETA, and among the features are GNOME 2.22 (with PolicyKit now integrated), Linux kernel 2.6.24 (that brings power savings to 64-bit processors), not to mention Firefox 3 (beta 4), PulseAudio, and Brasero (CD/DVD Burning) by default. Forbes World’s Billionaires Report 2008: Bill Gates Drops To Number 3

According to the 2008 World’s Billionaire Special Report released by Forbes, the Sage of Omaha - Warren Buffet has toppled Bill Gates from the number 1 spot as the richest person in the world. Warren Buffet’s wealth rose by about $10 billion since the last report, to a total net worth of $62 billion. Bill Gates, who held the title for about 13 years from 1995 until 2007, dropped to the number 3 spot, with Mexican telecomunications tycoon, Carlos Slim rising to number 2 on the list with a total net worth of $60 billion. Bill Gates added about $2 billion to his net worth in the past year, and now is worth $58 billion dollars. (more…)

Netscape Navigator Finally Comes to an End

If you noticed when using Netscape Navigator 9 and running the update for version 9.0.0.6, a notice will appear, stating that support for the browser will be terminated on the 1st of March 2008, urging users to switch to Flock and Firefox. After about 14 years since the first version came out in 1994, AOL who bought Netscape in 1998 decided to put an end to it. (more…)

The Easiest Way To Optimize Your Streamyx Connection

I get this question a lot of times. How do you speed up your Streamyx connection? (For those not familiar with it, Streamyx is an internet broadband service here in Malaysia). Not that I’m an expert in this field. Working in the IT field for the past few years, I get people telling me that they barely get the advertised connection speed from their internet connections, especially when downloading files from the net. Now, if you’re asking how to get like the full 1Mbps from a 1Mbps connection, then I would just answer - that’s not possible. For non-technical users, the advertised connection speed means it is provided on a best-effort basis, meaning that you will get only ‘almost’ that speed for most of the time, unless you’re on a leased line connection.
