taking it one breeze at a time
There have been news reports recently that Google Inc. is interested in setting up a base in Malaysia. According to a Business Times report, Malaysia is one of the 3 nations that Google is looking at (the other two stated are India and Vietnam), and the report also states that it plans to invest in the world’s biggest server farm which could be located in one of these countries. A similar report can be found in the New Straits Times.
In another report by Data Center Knowledge, it states that Taiwan has claimed just days earlier that Google was “leaning towards” developing a major data center in Taiwan. It also reports that Google is also scouting other countries like Japan, South Korea, India and Vietnam, and these are among the 18 countries Google is looking into, outside the US.
While the sparseness of these reports proves that no decision has been made, it’s really interesting to see leaders of these nations already claiming that Google is already “leaning towards”, “interested” or “want to make their presence felt” in these countries, although we have yet to see any official statements coming out of Google themselves.
Personally, I think the billion-dollar search giant will probably choose the nation with a significant number of broadband penetration and population, a solid internet backbone infrastructure and probably the cost effectiveness of running the data center in that particular country. With these in mind, the chances of Google picking Malaysia sounds a little far-fetched to me.
