taking it one breeze at a time
A new mobile phone network service has been introduced here in Malaysia by U Mobile Sdn. Bhd. The service, simply known as “U” will utilize the 018 prefix. Formerly known as MiTV Corporation Sdn Bhd., U Mobile is one of the 3G (third-generation) mobile technology licence holders in the country. Since its introduction in September 2007, it has announced services such as Mobile Live TV which is a digital live broadcast TV service, along with other services such as mobile telephony and data over a high-speed HSDPA driven network. It also has a domestic roaming partnership with Celcom, which should mean that network coverage should be a available throughout the country. At the time of writing, it is not yet known when this service will be available to consumers, although there are already reports of trial services being done.
Reportedly also, U Mobile has tied up a deal worth US$200million with Korean Telecom Freetel (KTF) and Japanese telco giant, NTT DoCoMo in December 2007. Both companies took up a 33% stake in U Mobile Sdn. Bhd.

It should really be an exciting prospect for mobile phone users in Malaysia, because from what we have experienced before, the competition has helped a lot in making our mobile services cheaper.
Also, a new player coming in, particularly in the 3G service area should make things more interesting, particularly because 3G services in Malaysia can be seen as still being in its infancy. With the strategic partnership in place with both KTF and NTT DoCoMo, U Mobile should be expected to push more innovation into the Malaysian mobile services scene, using the vast expertise and resources made available by these two leading companies.
